The Final event for our 135 celebration is nearing and tickets will be available January 26th, February 2nd and 9th. Pick up your tickets in the Hall at coffee hour. You need a ticket to attend although there is no cost. Firstly we need to know how many are attending, for catering — we can accommodate a maximum of 140 people. We also need to know of dietary restrictions such as gluten free or vegan — there will be lots of vegetarian pizzas. There will be a cash bar where beer, wine, or soft drinks can be purchased. We will set up an area in the Peace alcove where young children can play during the event. Looking forward to seeing you there. |
A 135-SnippetSubmitted by Carol Cook on behalf of the 135th Anniversary Committee When you are at the Cathedral do you ever admire the many beautiful vestments, wall hangings, etc, and wonder who made them?I don’t know all the answers but here are a few people we should be grateful to for items that beautify our worship space. In the 60’s and 70’s Adrian Ross was responsible for making vestments, altar frontals and banners, and more. There was a Monday morning sewing group under the leadership of Sylvia Ommaney and I am sure they helped him out. From 1981 to 1985, Mary Jane Muir was the Liturgical Arts coordinator. She was involved with intergenerational events, church school, and costumes for pageants. She made several banners including one for the World Council of Churches meeting here in Vancouver. She also designed some amazing artwork still used for bulletin covers today. […] For more infomation visit: http://thecathedral.ca/news/a-135-snippet-submitted-by-carol-cook

Recommended Reading from the CATs Bookshelf
BUFFALO SHOUT, SALMON CRY This collection of essays and poetry explores the lamentable clash between Indigenous and settler cultures, spiritualities and attitudes toward creation. Originating with the Mennonite community, the text asserts that global warming is a settler-colonial problem. The book is not about demonizing settlers or inducing guilt. Instead, it asks us to look deeply into our systems of privilege, Christian history and responsibility. “For centuries our misunderstandings and conflicts have accumulated…In this book the issues are opened, offering information, insights and resolutions that amaze our usual thinking. Read it carefully with a prayer for understanding.” (Rudy Wiebe) This book was suggested for this list by one of the TRC Book Circles, for all of us seeking climate justice and our part in reconciliation. BUFFALO SHOUT, SALMON CRY challenges both our understanding of our own Christian creation story and our ability to transform those elements which had the power to oppress and devastate other cultures. This book is an invitation to renew our Christian faith through a more communal and personal relationship to caring for the gift of God’s creation. To find more great books to read on climate change, visit the CATS Bookshelf.
