Dean Christopher A. Pappas has named long-time parishioner Michael Law as Associate Warden for the Cathedral. Dr. Law takes over the role previously filled by Mike Den Haan, who stepped down as warden because he is relocating out of province.
Meet the new Associate Warden
"I was born in Singapore but grew up in Prince George. I’ve played the violin since I was five (with some hiatuses here and there), and music has always been important to me. I attended UBC for undergrad and ended up staying at the VST residences, where I met Heather Pynn. While I was in medical school, I think I complained to Heather that I had run into a musical “dead end” with the violin. She suggested that I audition for the Christ Church Cathedral Choir. I knew very little about Anglicanism and only slightly more about Christianity at the time but I decided to give it a go.
It turns out that the Cathedral’s nexus of music, liturgy, community, and theology was very appealing and not long after I joined that choir I decided to get baptized! I think that was 25 years ago. I moved to Ottawa for five years for my Anesthesiology residency and also lived in Seattle for a year during my subspecialty fellowship. However, the Cathedral has always been my church home. I was married here and Nate was baptized here and I continue to sing in the choir — Rupert has been very accepting of my irregular schedule. In some ways, I’ve been a rather reticent member of the congregation; however, I’ve always appreciated the diverse ways in which the parish bears Christian witness.
The rest of my life has been pretty busy. I’ve been married to Maggie for almost 15 years. Nate is now twelve. I’m a consultant anesthesiologist at Royal Columbian and Eagle Ridge hospitals. I have a clinical faculty appointment at UBC and am involved in teaching medical students and residents. I do a bit of committee work for the UBC department and have lately started dabbling in clinical research. I’ve also recently become a more serious cyclist and have entered a gravel stage race in August."
