Christ Church Cathedral Vancouver is hiring a Sunday School Teacher to join our Cathedral Ministry team. This position is responsible for the planning and execution of the Sunday School program.

The Children and Family Ministry Program (CYF) aims to affirm the significance of children and their families both at the Cathedral and in the Anglican Church of Canada. The program seeks to accompany them on their spiritual journey and welcome them into a safe place of wondering, learning, belonging and growth.

About the Role

The Sunday School Teacher offers opportunities for faith formation and spiritual growth for children on Sundays. The Sunday School Teacher will work with children, their families, clergy, volunteers and other staff members to provide opportunities for children to learn, grow and work together for the transformation of the world.

Position Title: Sunday School Teacher

Position Profile: On-site part-time position consisting of up to an average of 5 hours per week at hourly wage rate ($22.50)

Hours of work: Must include three hours per week on Sunday mornings, from 9:30am to 12:30pm, and 2 hours of preparation during the week for Sundays

Reports to: Cathedral Vicar

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the Vicar, you have the primary role for the following areas of responsibility:

  1. Plans, organizes, implements and evaluates an annual calendar of engaging, creative and regular children’s Sunday education program. This ideally includes:
  2. On Sundays during the program year, leading Godly Play stories;
  3. Participating in family-oriented/intergenerational worship opportunities at key points in the liturgical calendar (e.g. Christmas, Easter, All Saints, etc.);
  4. In the summer, participating in Vacation Bible School, if it is offered through the Diocese, and other summer Sunday activities;
  5. Planning and implementing occasional fun community building events as well as service opportunities.
  6. Keeps participation and information records of children, youth, their caregivers and volunteers in this ministry area.
  7. Maintains a good working relationship with the Vicar, communicating needs of this aspect of our children and family ministry, suggesting areas for growth.
  8. Is familiar with safety measures (e.g. fire plans), sexual misconduct and abuse prevention practices and policies for all who work with young people at Christ Church Cathedral; and recommends updated practices and policies as needed and in collaboration with the Vicar.

Qualifications

  • Deep and thoughtful Christian faith, and preferably knowledge of Anglican tradition;
  • Experience working with children, youth and adults in a teaching capacity;
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills for event management and team building;
  • Willingness to learn new skills and receive constructive feedback for professional growth;
  • Strong team player with excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with staff and families;
  • Energy and enthusiasm, displaying a genuine love of working with children.

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, and some study of the Christian tradition would be an asset
  • The successful applicant must be a minimum of 20 years old
  • Able to work on-site on Sundays from 9.30am - 12.30pm
  • Complete a successful Criminal Records Check with vulnerable sector search

To be completed upon hiring (if not already completed):

  • Safe Church policy orientation per the Diocese of New Westminster’s Screening in Faith policy and training
  • Dismantling Racism Training Certificate
  • Basic First Aid/CPR (Child) or equivalent
  • Godly Play Training.
