Hope Matters: Why Changing the Way We Think is Critical to Solving the Environmental Crisis

Elin Kelsey     Greystone Books/David Suzuki Institute    2020

Elin Kelsey wrote this book for us and those we love, those who realize the world needs our help during the current climate emergency. She believes “the environmental crisis is also a crisis of hope.”

Without hope we can slide towards apathy and inaction. But what happens when we live in hope? If we are suffering from “headline stress disorder,” how do we find ways to replace the problems with solutions?

Elin Kelsey is a science and environmental writer and an adjunct professor of environmental studies at the University of Victoria. In her work as a scientist and a writer, she shares examples of hope in action from around the world – stories that don’t often make the news but show how the planet can be healed. Resilience of salmon populations and forests, rejuvenation of degraded agricultural lands, and the results of ocean cleanup and conservation. Imagine if these stories were part of our daily news.

Not only does our planet benefit from more people with a hopeful mindset, so do our spirits and health - our brains perform better and we make better decisions. Acting as a buffer against stress and anxiety, hope can inspire us to persevere through difficult times and have the resilience to overcome challenges - and we are more likely to make positive decisions regarding our health. Neuroscience and psychiatry show a hopeful mindset engages compassion for nature and encourages motivation to work for the common good.

Elin Kelsey offers us so much in this book that it is hard to sum it up in a few words. We encourage you to read it, talk about it. May it lift you up so we can work together in any and all ways we are able, to protect God’s creation.
