This Sunday the Cathedral Choir welcomes members of Elektra, EnChor, and Chor Leoni to the 10:30 Eucharist to celebrate some remarkable shared history together.
In April of 1999 the Cathedral Choir, Elektra, and Chor Leoni presented the (as far as we knew) Vancouver premiere of the Rachmaninov’s Vespers. We gave 2 performances, one at the Cathedral and another at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts. (Both, predictably, sold out.)
The following spring, Vancouver choirs swept the CBC’s biannual Choral Competition and these three choirs found themselves on stage together again alongside other winning ensembles at the Chan Centre for a concert called CBC Celebration. That April 2000 concert featured Chor Leoni, Vancouver Chamber Choir, Phoenix, Vancouver Cantata Singers, musica intima, Vancouver Bach Choir, and the Cathedral Choir. (The Cathedral Choir’s premiere of Psalm 151 brought the house down.) The sold-out performance was recorded for national broadcast by CBC.
Ikon of Light—an exploration of Russian Easter music—followed in 2003, with performances at Holy Rosary Cathedral and Surrey’s Church of the Good Shepherd.
We are excited to welcome guest conductor Morna Edmundson and so many friends to sing Bruckner and Mendelssohn with us this week. Don’t miss it!
