Humanity is a mixed bag, capable of so much beauty and so much evil - something Jesus well understood.
It’s never clear why Judas betrayed Jesus. Was he disillusioned with Jesus’s ministry? Did he need money for his family? Was he a greedy and callous person? Perhaps he didn’t anticipate that Jesus would be killed as a result.
What is clear is that Jesus invited him into his inner circle. In John’s Gospel, Judas was the keeper of the money box, he was the treasurer. Despite knowing Judas was going to betray him, at this last supper Jesus included him at the table, and shared the bread and the wine with him.
