Are you interested in saving power and receiving a credit on your hydro bill? Read on to see how Diane Mckendrick, a member of CATS, did both.
A year ago, I signed up for a challenge through BC Hydro called Power Smart. I started small by changing the timing of running my appliances i.e., dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. I progressed to only drying my clothes on a clothes rack, turning down my heat 1-2 degrees at bedtime, drawing the shades after dark and turning off lights.
Doing small things adds up. I reduced my consumption in the year by 10% and will receive a credit of 100.00 on my next hydro bill.
Please join 285,000 BC customers at teampowersmart@bchydro.com and start your challenge.

We would like to offer our congratulations to Vince Beiser, winner of the Writers' Trust 2025 Balsillie Prize for Public Policy for his book Power Metal: The Race for the Resources That Will Shape the Future. Riverhead Books. Beiser was selected for the juried prize.
On November 16, Vince Beiser presented a forum on behalf of CATS called There's No Such Thing as Clean Energy. It was both informative and engaging, and offered insights about the rare metals that are used in daily products, such as cellphone and laptop batteries, the massive amount of metal used in cars, both electric and gas driven, and more. He explained the effects these metals have on the environment and on the global political power base. This forum was well-received and kept people talking and thinking about the ways clean energy really isn’t as clean as we all thought. For a great read, find this book in your local library and gain an understanding of the issues of clean energy.
